"Laia, good news! I got a ticket to
the special screening for you!" We're threading our way through
the lunchtime crowd at the BWU cafeteria. The menu today has a Scottish
theme: your choice of haggis samosa or pork pastie vindaloo.
"Fabulous!" I love old 2D movies.
They've been working round the clock restoring this one particular
film for months, and I've been dying to go to the Official Sneak
Preview. "Um, Grandmother? Is there any chance I could score
some tickets for a few friends I think would really, really like
to go?"
The glass walls of the cafeteria part to
let us out onto the patio. "Well, how many friends are you
talking about?"
We put our trays on a table near the guardrail
where we'll have a nice view of the Bronx Lagoon and sit down. "Oh,
just a few thousands."
Abuela looks up from her pastie vindaloo
in shock. "Thousands!"
"What can I say?" I dump a dollop
of chutney on my samosa. "I'm a very popular girl."
Grandmother gives me a long, steady look,
but it does no good. I am blush-proof.
"Thousands?"
"At least."
The great Jeanine Salla sighs. "All
right," she says. "I guess we can do that."
